The Number is Rising: 8,100 Homeless Youth, and Every Number Has a Name

Outreach Indiana Raises Awareness to a Powerful Truth

As November marks Youth Homelessness Awareness Month, we’re launching a campaign with both a simple message and a powerful truth: “The Number is Rising: And Every Number Has a Name.” Throughout this month, we are dedicated to raising awareness for the thousands of homeless youth in our community who are often unseen, unheard, and underestimated—but never forgotten.

In Indianapolis alone, over 8,100 youth and young adults are projected to face homelessness this year. Each one is more than a number; they have a name, a story, and a hope for a brighter future.

Watch CEO Andrew Neal’s Message!

“Youth homelessness is often invisible,” Andrew explains.

“These young people aren’t always in shelters or on the streets—they’re couch-surfing, staying in cars, or struggling to find a safe place to sleep. The statistics are staggering—57% of homeless youth go at least one day each month without food, and they are 9 times more likely to die by suicide than their housed peers.”

“But behind these numbers are young lives waiting to be transformed through love and relationships. These aren’t just statistics; they are young people with names and dreams.”

Relationships at the Heart of Change

At Outreach Indiana, we know that lasting change happens through relationships. For over 27 years, we have walked alongside youth facing homelessness, building trusting connections that become the foundation of transformation. Whether it’s connecting young people with mental health support, providing food and shelter, or simply listening to their stories, our approach is deeply personal.

“We know the power of relationships. What drives real change isn’t just access to resources—it’s love, trust, and connection. Our goal isn’t just to help youth survive—it’s to help them thrive,” says Andrew.

“When we open our hearts and arms to these young people, we’re saying,
‘You matter. We see you. We believe in you.’”

Our "The Number is Rising" campaign aims not only to shed light on the growing number of homeless youth but also to call the community to action. Neal shares a message of hope and a challenge to everyone:

“We invite political leaders, business owners, community members, churches—everyone—to join us. Together, we can end youth homelessness in our city, and then in our state. These young people are our kids, our neighbors, and they deserve more than survival. They deserve dignity, love, and the opportunity to live out their dreams.”
